I am clearly late to the game in recapping my 4th of July weekend, but I am going to do so anyway as it included exploring a new city and some retro style. In the latest issue of Chicago mag, there was an article about easy Midwest escapes that piqued my interest. One of the escapes listed was Le Claire, Iowa and I instantly could not believe I had yet to visit seeing how many times we drive right past on our way to Quad Cities. As the article pointed out, Le Claire is pickers’ paradise when it comes to treasure finds and antiques! A visit to Antique Archaeology was high on my list given the star-tourism appeal (American Pickers, anyone?). As we reached the top of the hill, we were greeted by an old school, beat up car with Antique Archaeology branding on it as well as a rare collection of motorcycles. We stumbled upon quite a few vintage finds – I couldn’t get enough of the vintage gas station signs and old time standing clocks.
The main strip, Cody street, included several boutiques, gift shops and antique/vintage shops. We also made a pit stop at Wild River Winery for a wine tasting (highly recommend Double Jeopardy!) and Green Tree Brewery for a couple pints. All in all, it was a fun and super easy road trip!
There are many unique places to visit in the Midwest – it just requires some research. A few excursions on our list include:
- Grand Rapids brewery tour
- New Glarus Bavarian-style Polkafest
- Holland Tulip Time Festival
- Mackinac Island
- Door County weekend
- Sleeping Bear Dunes
- Day trip to Milwaukee
- Weekend trip to Des Moines
Summer time is the perfect excuse to pack up a bag and haul the bikes to a new Midwest destination worth exploring. More than likely, you’ll uncover great shopping, restaurants and outdoor adventure along the way. I will be sure to share more of our weekend jaunts as they happen!
