Beauty Refresh: Vol. 1

I am so excited to share a new weekly series kicking off on See Happiness Through today. My content has predominantly zeroed in on personal style and home design – two topics that feel most relevant, inspirational and fun for me. Beauty is something that interests me, specifically testing out different brands and products that I normally wouldn’t look into. Similar to style, when I find something I like I generally stick to it. Why fix something that ain’t broken? The benefits of skincare and the transformational affect makeup has on look and personal confidence is so fascinating. The last 5 years I’ve stuck with brands, products and colors I am familiar and most comfortable with. Comfort is not a bad thing, but general curiosity and interest in exploring the benefits and uniqueness of other brands and products is important to me. This brings me to Vol. 1 of Beauty Refresh. My goal is to discover, feature and speak to new products I try out and add to my beauty repertoire each week. For many of us, the beauty arena may feel saturated, but what remains most adorning is the high standards and inspiring missions all these beauty companies live and breathe by.

Full disclosure – my makeup bag needed a refresh. I am pretty sure I’ve been using the same bronzing powder I bought close to 3 years ago (yikes!) and if you asked me last week what highlighter I use, my reply would be ‘what is that, why do I need it and where do I apply‘? I am the first to admit I am no beauty expert (I didn’t start using eyeliner until I was a sophomore in college), but I believe in the power of beauty routine. A new lip gloss or bold new shade of blush makes me happy and of course gives a boost of confidence. It is safe to say I waited way too long to get my ass to Sephora and do a clean sweep of my day-to-day makeup. I enlisted my bestie Justine, expert makeup guru and blogger behind Short is the New Black, to help guide me in the makeup discovery and application process. She (1) introduced me to new brands, (2 ) uncovered shades that match and compliment my complexion, (3) reviewed the order of and proper application of each product and (4) made me feel confident/excited/beautiful with the items I purchased!

For my everyday essentials, I predominantly stuck with the brands I love: Laura Mercier, NARS and Bobbi Brown. To mix it up, I chose a new blush color for Fall (one I wouldn’t normally go for) and added two new items I’ve never used before (but needed!) – a highlighter and translucent loose setting powder. My makeup bag feels lighter, which makes me very happy. I do believe less is more – since moving into our new house, I have made it my mission to genuinely only buy and keep things I use everyday. Why keep something if we have no intention of using it? I’ve included a full product list below, featuring all the new goodies I purchased! My goal for Beauty Refresh is to include products beyond makeup: skincare, masks, scrubs, haircare, razors, fragrance, vitamins, etc. The world of beauty is my oyster and I’m excited to discover some new picks! Who knows… maybe these weekly round ups will inspire you to give something new a go. Cheers to that.
